What is the Master Data Management Framework (MDMF)

The Master Data Management Framework is an open architecture methodology used to implement and maintain the enterprise data functions of a business thru Data Integration. The framework is customized for each client by utilization of their SDLC, Enterprise Metadata Repository and Data Management Tool set in a standardized fashion at the project layer to drive the enterprise layer. This framework was evolved to provide solutions to the common business problems encountered in integrating pieces of the business (specifically data) into an enterprise view. The framework addresses data integration, data quality, data mapping, and data governance in a standardized format across the enterprise. This framework can be used to build the Enterprise Architecture data functions while also integration the business processes related to that data. The demo highlights some of the points below but it is not a full version of the product.

The major highlights for the product are as follows.

  • Complete customization for each client based on their System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Enterprise Metadata Repository (EMR) and Toolset.
  • The Enterprise Data Model (EDM) that illustrates how data is related across an enterprise.
  • A Strategy that shows how to do the data integration using the Enterprise Data Model (EDM).
  • Customizing the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) by isolating the Data Management Tasks required to do integration at the project layer.
  • Defining the Enterprise Methodology related to projects involved in Data Integration by using a Data Governance Framework.
  • Road Mapping to define the Release Cycles for Data Governance.
  • Using the Data Governance Framework for reporting Data Integration results across the enterprise.
  • Intranet based for broad viewing by employees across the Enterprise providing a single version view of the data.
  • Data Integration across the Enterprise Data Model (EDM) is accomplished by Source To Target mappings identified during Data Harmonization (DH).
  • The Data Harmonization Templates are standardized for Data Management Reviews and for uploading into the Enterprise Metadata Repository (EMR).
  • Vendor Tool selection based on the Roles and Data Management Tasks.
  • Base HTML version and a DWT version using a global template.

The section below describes how to implement the framework from a consultant point of view.

How to use the Master Data Management Framework

Review the Enterprise Data Model to understand the complete view for used data across the enterprise.

Review the Enterprise Data Management Strategy to understand how all of the pieces from each layer integrate into an enterprise view that is maintainable and grows the Metadata Repository driven by each project. The core of this concept is the Conceptual Data Element Template which is attributed based on the Metadata Repository being utilized. This strategy works on COTS products as well as client grown applications. The various templates are used in conjunction with the System Development Life Cycle as output for various tasks within the Data Management Life Cycle. The standardized format is easy to use for gate reviews as well as for loading the Metadata Repository ensuring all fields are captured for each project. Outside a project the ability to reverse engineer information into the Conceptual Data Element Template is useful to initially build the core of the Metadata Repository or to add valuable information not currently being addressed in a project. The Review of Data Requirements can be information the Data Governors require be added to the metadata Repository for completeness.

The Project Data Management Life Cycle is the core of this strategy because the project layer should drive the enterprise layer integration. This life cycle is at three levels: the ADM Phases, which include all of the tasks associated with a project for the chosen Life cycle; the Data Management Methodology level which includes only the tasks from the ADM Phases that have to do with Data Management: and the Project Artifacts which are the outputs or deliverables from the data management tasks. The Templates are used as standardized collection device to organize all data inputs. New templates can be integrated as usage of the Metadata Repository grows as long as the resulting task to generate the template is included in the Data Management Level. These tasks and artifacts can be mapped into a project plan.

The Enterprise Data Management Life Cycle is the integration layer driven by the projects. The Conceptual Data Element Template is the input into the Data Harmonization Process that the Data Governors manage. The Data Governors decide if a proposed new Conceptual Data element is to be included or if an update to an existing Conceptual Data Element's metadata is required thru the Data Governance Process. The Data Governors also decide what changes are to be made to the Enterprise Data Object Model to reflect the business needs.

The Data Management Tool Selection matrix can be filled out after the Project Data Management Life Cycle is completed. Selecting the right tools customized for the way a company does business rather than relying on using the vendor life cycle based on their specific tool set gives the enterprise more options in an open architecture manner.

The Project Data Management Life Cycle and the Enterprise Data Management Life Cycle have defined stages and artifacts which can be reviewed on the DMF INDEX page.
